A Short Note on the Demise of The
Schillinger System
I believe the demise of The Schillinger System began when the GI
Bill (which paid for World War II veterans' education) came to an end.
Many of our students purchased the Schillinger books when they were finally
published, which were also paid for by the GI Bill. But I think a number
of those students did not complete the course.
At the same time, the US Congress levied a large tax on the entertainment
industry. As a result, overnight most ballrooms closed. Hotel ballrooms
closed, theatre orchestras--even organists--were cancelled out, followed by the
disbanding of many of the big bands. With nothing to compose or arrange
for, Schillinger in all phases saw an almost complete drop-off in interest,
resulting--in my opinion--in the very low quality of music we have today.
